    2012 Draft Lowdown

2012 draftee Search & DePoy (l) talks PRG with incoming Fresh Meat at a recent league gathering. 2012 draftee Search & DePoy (l) talks PRG with incoming Fresh Meat at a recent league gathering.

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for! On January 4, 2012, Philly Roller Girls will buzz with excitement as the draft committee meets to place twelve unattached skaters on to the league’s local home teams. The draft committee consists of six representatives, two from each of the home teams: the Broad Street Butchers (Antidote and Devoida Mercy), Heavy Metal Hookers (Alessa Evil and Goldy), and Philthy Britches (Castro and Rollanya Asse).

Ten of the draftees have recently graduated from our 2011 fresh meat program, and will be placed on one of PRG’s home teams: Alison Scutti, Butterscotch Cripple, Dooms Dana, Geez Ruiz, Helen of Gore, Kiki Nass, Savidge Booty, Search & DePoy, SPQR, and Sue E. Side Hotline.

Alison Scutti, Kiki Nass, SPQR, and Sue E. Side Hotline all had the opportunity to bout with the Independence Dolls during the second half of 2011. The remaining fresh meat graduates have not bouted officially, except Butterscotch Cripple—Cripple recently returned to derby after a taking a long leave of absence, then skating as a referee for the Philly Roller Girls for two seasons. She skated previously with the Broad Street Butchers and the Liberty Belles in 2007 and 2008.

The remaining two draftees, Miranda Slambert and Miss Fortune, are returning PRG skaters. Miranda Slambert skated with the Heavy Metal Hookers in 2008 and 2009, and has guest skated with them a few times since 2009. Miss Fortune, who transferred to Philly from the Rat City Roller Girls (Seattle, WA) in 2010, skated with the Heavy Metal Hookers and Liberty Belles in 2010.

Reigning Warrior Cup Champs the Philthy Britches are undergoing some turnover for 2012. The following eleven Britch skaters will be returning: Belle Diablo, Castro, Dara Licks, Dotti Horror, Ginger Vitis, Gloria Grindem, Mo Pain, Rollanya Asse, Olivia Face, PMS, and StingRay; but Arson Crafts, Cybil War, and Mercedes Benz will not be wearing their dirty red trousers this year. The Britches are indisputably the winningest team in PRG history. Their only loss in PRG intraleague play, which started in 2006, was against the Broad Street Butchers at the 2010 Warrior Cup.

The Broad Street Butchers, who finished second in 2011, are losing several skaters. Annie Christ, Leggs Benedict, Persephone, Ovarian Cyster, and Sunshine Skate are hanging up their aprons for 2012. The Butchers are still rostering a solid crew of Antidote, Boosh, Devoida Mercy, Eileen U. Scream, Elle Viento, Fiesty Psyche, Mary That Motha OH GOD!, Nina Knockout, Shananigans, and Shenita Stretcher—they have ten total skaters returning.

The Heavy Metal Hookers are retaining thirteen of their own: Alessa Evil, Copper Top, The Cycrone!, Euro Thrash, Fully Addomatic, Goldy, Heavy Flo, LaiYa Out Ali, Mandawar , R2DCup, Roxy Elbowa, Teflon Donna, and Wendy Whiplash. Ivana Rock and Sister Sinister are cleaning up their acts and sitting out the 2012 season. The Hookers have not made it to a Warrior Cup since 2009—could 2012 be the year they return?

While the draft is exciting because it introduces fresh talent into the ranks, the primary goal is to create three evenly matched home teams. Each skater is ranked according to skill level and experience. The draft committee will then use the ranking system to calculate the strength of each team, and place draftees on the appropriate teams in order to obtain equally weighted and numbered teams. The committee considers previous team affiliation, but it is not guaranteed that skaters will return to the teams for which they once skated. The draft results will be announced at the Snow Brawl, PRG’s end-of-year party, on January 7th, and posted on www.phillyrollergirls.com that week.

Good luck to all of our Fresh Meat and returning skaters!

Very sad to hear the people not skating this 2012 year, good luck to the "fresh meat" Hope to see the non-returning skaters still come out and show support...
